Weighing up the pros and cons of braces

11th September 2018

At Denchic Dental Spa, we don’t sugar-coat information concerning your dental treatments with us. Sugar is so bad for your teeth! In all seriousness, what we have learnt from our years of working with patients who have lots of questions and different ideas about things like braces in North London is that the truth and some discussion is all that is needed to make people more comfortable. Often, things that people worry about are not that bad, once we have explained the reality. Also, many issues that may have been a problem with teeth straightening many years ago, no longer are.

Below, we address a few of the common anxieties that patient have around braces in North London. Every patient has different questions so, if yours are not answered here, get in touch and we will let you know all that you need to in order to make choices about your teeth-straightening treatment.

Pain and discomfort

Braces in North London are often associated with pain and/or discomfort. This might be the result of a general idea that dental treatments cause difficult sensations, or it might be related to something you have heard from a friend or in the media. The truth is that there is some validity to this one.

Full-on pain is not common with braces and any difficult issues should be immediately reported to us so that we can help. Discomfort is common, however, and usually follows when braces are first fitted or after they are adjusted. This is often described as an ache or throbbing. It can be alleviated with ordinary painkillers. Some people find that a cold compress is also helpful.

Looking bad

Another common conception is that braces must look awful and that this is something that you must live with. Modern straightening methods substantially reduce the impact that braces have on your look. Some are completely clear so that people can hardly tell you are wearing dental equipment. Others are blended with the colours in the mouth so that they are harder to spot, and they are certainly less noticeable than metal braces were for patients in the past.
