At every check-up appointment at Denchic Dental Spa, our highly experienced team will check for signs of gum disease.

There are two levels of gum disease – gingivitis and periodontitis.

How do I know if I have Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease. It arises when plaque builds up on teeth and the gums in response become inflamed. It is also a side effect experienced during some pregnancies.

Signs of gingivitis include:

  • Gums that are red and swollen, and bleeding after eating hard foods such as apples
  • Blood in the toothbrush or sink after brushing your teeth
  • Halitosis (bad breath) and an unpleasant taste in your mouth

When spotted early, gingivitis is easy to treat. Our dentists also offer the following prevention advice:

  • Regularly visit your dentist and hygienist to check for early symptoms and remove plaque
  • Follow your dentist’s advice on how best to clean your teeth, including brushing between teeth
  • Change your toothbrush regularly
  • Wash your toothbrush thoroughly after every use, and let it dry

What is periodontitis?

Left untreated, gingivitis can become periodontitis, a more serious form of gum disease. Periodontitis affects the soft tissue that holds the teeth in place, with the gums beginning to separate from the teeth. The jaw bones can also be affected and the bone can start to dissolve, causing teeth to loosen and fall out. Periodontitis is usually slow to progress and can take several years to develop. Regular visits to Denchic Dental Spa can stop the condition in its tracks and save your smile.

Signs of periodontitis include:

  • Receding gums
  • A discharge around the gums
  • Your front teeth become more spaced out
  • Your teeth bite together differently

At Denchic Dental Spa our team will remove plaque from your teeth and can advise you on the best way to brush your teeth effectively. If the condition is very severe, you may require further treatment, including gum surgery. Our team will discuss any further treatment that is needed and provide you with a treatment plan.
