Common questions about teeth whitening answered

29th December 2015

If stained or discoloured teeth are making your life a misery, you may be thinking about using teeth whitening treatment to boost your smile. At Denchic Dental Spa in North London we offer several options for brightening your smile. Here, we answer some common questions about whitening, and explain why it must only be carried out under a dentist’s supervision.

How does teeth whitening work?

Teeth whitening treatment uses special bleaching gel to gently remove stains from your teeth. Stains build up through the food and drink we consume, through smoking and from taking certain medicines. When carried out by a dentist, whitening treatment is a fast, safe and effective way to get rid of these stains and restore a natural brighter sheen to your teeth.

At our North London dental practice, we have three options for teeth whitening: home whitening, Phillips Zoom Whitening here at the practice, and Enlighten Evolution, which combines home whitening with a session here at Denchic Dental Spa.

I’ve seen plenty of whitening products online – why do I need to visit my dentist?

The most important thing to remember about teeth whitening is that, by law, it can only be carried out by a dentist or a hygienist on a dentist’s prescription. Whitening products used at the dental practice have been extensively tested for both safety and effectiveness. Over-the-counter products and those available from the internet will be of inferior quality. At best, they will not work. At worst, they can seriously damage your teeth and gums.

Teeth whitening should only be carried out on a healthy mouth. We will assess your teeth and gums before starting treatment.

How long will treatment take?

The length of time your treatment will take will depend upon the original shade of your teeth and on which treatment option you choose. Phillips Zoom Whitening at our North London practice takes about one hour, while home whitening takes two weeks.
