Facial Rejuvenation

Facial rejuvenation techniques can soften wrinkles for a more youthful appearance, without the need for surgical procedures. Dentists have the skills and thorough knowledge and understanding of the facial anatomy to perform this delicate work in a precise manner.

Our practice uses the botulin toxin type A for this treatment, an injectable aesthetic solution. Once injected into the skin, the botulinum toxin relaxes the tiny facial muscles, which cause expression lines, by blocking the nerve impulses in them, leaving the skin looking smoother.

Areas on the face that can be treated include frown lines (vertical lines which form between the eyebrows), eyebrows, crows’ feet, forehead lines and lines around the mouth and top lip, known as ‘smoker’s lines’.

The botulinum injection is quick and painless; usually lasting around 5-10 minutes and requires no antiseptic. Results will usually be seen in a few days, sometimes taking between 4-7 days for the effects to be seen.

As this is not a permanent treatment, the effects will wear off over time, so we recommended that the procedure be repeated every 3 months for effective results.

Dermal Fillers:

There is a difference between the botulinum toxin and dermal fillers. The former relaxes the muscles whereas the fillers fill and plump up lines, wrinkles and grooves to make the skin look more youthful.

Fillers usually consist of sterile hyaluronic acid gels made from non-animal sources. As we age the skin’s natural hyaluronic acid is lost giving rise to the appearance of lines, wrinkles and folds. Injecting fillers into the skin acts to replace the hyaluronic acid that is lost with age. They are also used for lip enhancement and for shaping facial, hand and neck contours.

The injections only take a few minutes and the effect of the treatment is visible immediately. Depending on the area treated, skin type and the injection technique, the filler effect can last between 6-12 months (usually six months for lips). Follow-up treatments will help to maintain the plumped up look over time.

Botox® FAQs

What is Botox®?

Botox® (Botulinum Toxin Type A) is a protein which relaxes muscles, smoothing lines and wrinkles caused by repeated facial movements.

Why should I consider Botox® treatment?

As we age, skin loses its elasticity, and dynamic wrinkles begin to form. Botox® is a solution to enhance your appearance.

What is involved in the treatment and how long does it take?

Treatment time can range from 15 to 30 minutes. Very small amounts of Botulinum Toxin are injected into the target areas using a tiny needle. This blocks the impulse from the nerve to the facial muscles, reducing the contractions that cause wrinkles. Following the treatment the skin over the muscles looks smooth and even.

How soon will I be able to see results?

Results from Botox® begin to show within 1-2 weeks of treatment

Does the treatment cause discomfort?

DR Gill is skilled at administering precision injections as painlessly as possible. To minimise discomfort a very fine needle and only a small amount of liquid is used. A local anesthetic is not usually required before treatment

What happens following my treatment?

Following treatment you can continue your daily activities as normal, this includes eating, drinking, wearing make up and going to work. It will not be noticeable that you have had treatment. We advise to not exercise or use steam/saunas.

Are there any side effects?

Very small amounts of Botulinum Toxin are used, so this treatment is not harmful. The most common side effects are temporary and localised bruising, slight redness of the skin and occasionally slight swelling at the injection site. You may also experience a headache for a short while.

What areas of the face can benefit from Botox®?

• Smile lines around your nose and mouth
• Corners of your mouth
• Frown lines between the eyebrows
• Crow’s feet
• Chin dimples
• Forehead lines

How often do will I need treatment

To maintain your new look you may need ‘touch-up’ treatments twice a year with Botox®. If you decide to stop treatment, your skin will gradually return to it’s normal and original shape.

DERMAL FILLERS FAQ’s

What are Dermal Fillers?

The key ingredient in dermal fillers is hyaluronic acid, a natural component of skin. They are injected just below the surface of the skin and add volume and/or structure for up to 6 months. Hyaluronic acid is a natural sugar found in your body. Hyaluronic acid commonly occurs in skin, joints and in the eyes. The role of hyaluronic acid in skin is to hydrate the skin (by attracting and binding to water molecules), to act as a cushioning agent and also to deliver nutrients.

Why should I consider Dermal Fillers?

Some areas of the face can lack the volume we desire. When skin ages it loses its elasticity and becomes less supple. Due to this, lips can lose their volume, lines appear around the mouth and nose area, and cheeks can start to look sunken and hollow. Dermal fillers provide great ‘plumping’ solutions, without surgical procedures.

How long does the treatment take?

Treatment time can range from 15 to 30 minutes.

How soon will I be able to see results?

Results are visible immediately.

Jaw & Chin Line

How often do will I need treatment?

Touch-up treatments with dermal fillers (Hydrafill, Juvederm and Restylane) are required twice yearly, as over time these natural fillers are absorbed by your body, so if stop treatment your skin will gradually return to its original shape.

Will this treatment affect my facial expressions?

We use lots of muscles to give us facial expressions, so you will not be left expressionless. We selectively de-activate the muscles that cause the ageing lines that you are worried about.
